Cardinal Domenico Bartolucci (1917–2013) was an esteemed Italian composer, conductor, and organist, best known for his lifelong dedication to sacred music. As the director of the Sistine Chapel Choir from 1956 to 1997, he played a pivotal role in preserving and promoting the rich tradition of Gregorian chant and polyphony within the Catholic Church. A prolific composer, Bartolucci wrote numerous sacred choral works, masses, and orchestral pieces, deeply rooted in the classical tradition. His commitment to liturgical music earned him great recognition, and in 2010, Pope Benedict XVI elevated him to the rank of cardinal in honor of his contributions. Our Mission

The Cardinal Domenico Bartolucci Foundation, a non-profit musical charity based in Rome, was founded in 2003 to uphold the legacy of Maestro Domenico Bartolucci (1917-2013). As one of the greatest composers of lyric and sacred music in modern times, he was elevated to the College of Cardinals by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010—an unprecedented honor for a musical director in the history of the Church.

 

Guided by his vision, the Foundation:

-Organizes international concerts, spiritual, and musical training activities.

-Coordinates and develops research, publications, studies, and conferences on sacred music.

-Offers scholarships and free classes in liturgical music, fostering intercultural exchange among musicians worldwide.

-Continues the spiritual mission of evangelization through religious music, in collaboration with the Catholic Church.
